Tapestry- Carole King

Pop-influenced folk music.

Great when you’re morose or feeling depressed for it’s then that you can really appreciate the quiet talent it forecasts and all that it has to offer. Composed and written by Carole King herself, it loses in the entrancing rhythm that characterised her sharply different work with the 60s girl groups and female singers what it gains in depth. King’s strong vocals tell a personal story, sentimental yet emotionally restraint. She excels less on her own “Will you love me tomorrow” than the Shirelles for whom she and Goffin wrote the song but, as with “(You make me feel like) A natural woman” written for Aretha Franklin, her slow-paced rendition is perhaps more touching. That being said, the album relies solely and heavily on “Where you lead,” “Way over yonder,” “Feel the earth move” and “Smackwater Jack.” The more pop-oriented “It’s too late” and “Out in the cold” (reissue) and the ballad “So far away” are also worth checking. Expect to wallow in self-pity right after.

The Undertones- The Undertones

Garage punk rock

Definitely a youthful take on punk rock, but for the young and the old alike. You can live without it, but you can't dislike it_ even Sharkey's whiny vocals aren't annoying enough; they actually work well with the whole thing. A proper crowd album, I-jump-on-my-bed style. Those must have been crazy funny gigs!
So many good tracks to choose from! The best: "Casbah rock", "Teenage kicks", "Get over you", "She's a run around", "Girls don't like it" "Male model" and the bonus tracks: "Emergency cases", "She can only say no", "Mars bars". The titles alone give you an idea of the band's primary concern. Their music is about one thing, good fun, and, here, they loyally stick to it.

The Velvet Underground & Nico- The Velvet Underground (feat. Nico)

Art & experimental rock, proto-punk.

Reed's sweet vocals murmur texts that meant to experiment with music the way The Velvet meant to experiment with life. Add to that Nico's rough singing capacities and Warhol's claws, the end result is often disturbing and meant to be so. The album is a pearl that would have shone brighter had its originality sounded a little more natural. "Sunday morning," "Venus in furs," "Run run run," are fine pieces but it's "I'm waiting for the man," "Femme fatale," "Heroin," "There she goes again" and "I'll be your mirror" that make the album a Pearl
